test drive — winter

WINTER TEST DRIVE

Welcome to the test drive and thank you for your interest in The Village. This test drive is not game canon but will allow players the opportunity to experiment with game mechanics, the setting, and the flexibility of choice allowed by this game. The following prompts are examples of typical situations characters might face in the game. At least one thread from the TDM is required as part of the game's application process.

The setting details and locations are still being unveiled in the game, so prospective players are welcome to play with established locations or create their own within the general setting of Mathias.

( Recommended listening: )

INTO THE ENDLESS

Winter has arrived in Mathias. Snow falls steadily, big puffy flakes that pile up quickly in drifts as the wind blows them around town. The trees in the forest are covered in it, the branches bending under the weight and shaking when the piles fall from them to the forest floor. The roofs of buildings become solid white and drifts form in doorways as the wind tries to rush inside anywhere it can.

New arrivals wake in the forest, with its winding paths twisting back on themselves as they branch in either direction. It isn't safe to stray from the path, there is a menacing fog that waits just a few yards inward in any direction, but for now, there is nothing impeding movement along those snow-covered paths that cut through the trees. Continue stumbling in one direction and you'll reach the small town, coming out near the mishmash of quaint houses that nestle beside crumbling ruins that used to be homes. But choose the other and you'll seem to stumble on forever, huddling against the wind until there seems to be a clearing up ahead—

And then nothing. The earth opens up before you in a ravine so deep that the bottom cannot be seen. The other side can be seen, tantalizingly out of reach, and there is the sense that safety is just beyond, if only you could get there. But with that sensation is also the knowledge that if you stay here, you will die. The edge seems unsteady, like getting too close would set it crumbling and send you tumbling into that dark endless nothing that waits below...

BODIES WITHOUT SOULS

Benedict Books is nestled quaintly on the square surrounding Mathias's Town Hall, a thick layer of dirt covering the front windows. Looking through those windows provides a much different view than looking directly into the shop through the doorway — vague shapes and forms of figures seem to be inside, though no details can be determined through the streaks of grime. Flickers that resemble flashlights can be seen passing along the windows from time to time, and on occasion there is even a muffled tapping sound that comes from behind the glass, as if someone is trying to get your attention. The same distorted figures can be seen looking through the windows from the inside outward, but moving from one side or the other reveals... nothing. There is nothing there, and perhaps it is all in your imagination.

A portrait hangs at the front of the store to illustrate the namesake of the little shop... that may, in fact, not be so little. Dust covers everything in sight and detritus litters the wooden floor, as if someone left the door open and allowed half the forest inside.

The books are mostly familiar titles from the 1990s and earlier, but close examination will reveal that key details seem to have been changed. They fill shelves in neat lines along the walls and rows in between, the building almost seeming to stretch on forever until, finally, a small office can be seen tucked away in the back. A glance back toward the front door gives the impression that the room isn't that big, after all. Strange that you previously thought so.

Prying the door open is the only way to get inside the small office; the hinges have rusted and are caked with dirt and grime. Search as you might, there are no interesting bits of information to be found here beyond a few inventory lists on the little desk. There is, however, a green and gold safe in the corner that, no matter how many times one turns the dial, simply clicks and clicks. Scratches around the safe indicate that someone tried to get in at one point, though there's no indication as to whether they succeeded.

THE END APPROACHES

Standing at the center of Mathias, the town hall is a modest two-story building that would be welcoming if not for the faded sign, chipped paint, and deafening silence within its empty halls. It's a typical government building, with a reception desk at the front and rows of identical offices within, the names half faded from each door. But what catches the attention is a large bulletin board on the main wall beside the reception desk, once meant to hold flyers or announcements for the community.

What it holds now is decidedly different. Tacked onto the board are scraps of paper covered in an assortment of handwriting styles — requests for supplies should anyone find them, pieces of information shared in the hopes of someone understanding the strange symbols and mathematical equations, notes about those missing or recently deceased. And over the center of the board, tacked on top of other papers, is a map discolored with age. Mathias Township can be read in the corner, a stretch of forest displayed beneath it, but everything else has been smeared to illegibility with red... ink? Upon close examination, a keen eye will realize that the ink is actually blood, though whether it is human is unknown. And scrawled across that forest, nearly covering the illustration of a clearing and a large house within, are the words

he is coming

A number of tarnished metal pushpins are scattered around the edges of the board, waiting for future messages to be shared, and a stack of pristine white paper and pile of cheap ballpoint pens rest on one of three chairs beside the board. The chairs are clearly meant for those waiting for meetings and are covered in the same layer of grime as everything else in the building — everything except the pens, paper, and bulletin board.

[HELP I thought about waiting but I was just too excited. That's just. Such an odd way of phrasing things and John doesn't quite know what to make of it. I know a few that could go by that name. I'm a doctor of many things. Huh. That's... okay? Maybe it's a Canadian thing?

But she might know Dr. Benton, that's what she's saying here, right? He should try and stay on her good side, so he just says,]
Right.

[Right, he says, like that makes perfect sense, with the conviction of someone who is absolutely faking his oral exam.]

It's good to meet you, Dr. Magnus! I'm with the surgical department. [A beat.] I just said that. Sorry, it's just... it's been a long day.

[personal profile] setthetone 2020-12-24 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Carter seems to agree because there is a longer pause. Then,] That's really weird.

[But it beats freezing to death out in the cold, he guesses. Still.]

Let's just hope they're not angry bears wondering who slept in their bed and ate their food.

[This is horrible. Is he gonna get arrested by the end of this? Would it go into his permanent record? What if he can't get another job because it will show up every time he applies? Breaking and entering, house squatting, insanity defense...]

Okay, I've never been a squatter before, can you, uh, maybe help me pick one that isn't already taken?
setthetone: (surprised - profile)

[personal profile] setthetone 2020-12-24 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
Mathias... huh. Never heard of that one?

[Carter shoots her a sidelong glance because that's kind of weird. It'll make sense when you get there? Who says that? Why would you have to say that? What's going to be in that town that will make sense that doesn't out here?

But he's cold and miserable and at the same time ecstatic about getting to shelter and to coffee, so he just hurries along.]

Chicago. Which I thought I was still at. I'm not, am I? I must have some kind of memory lapse, maybe the cold, or, or maybe I was robbed...

[His hand comes up to feel the back of his head. No bump, though. No headache or nausea either. It's so strange.]

[ HIT ME UP FAM LETS GO A Canadian thing. Hardly, she's very British in fact. ]

I hope that your expertise won't be needed here. Although, you never know. [ She smiles. ] General surgery, or do you have a certain area you are best known for?

[ elena opens her mouth, considers what she's about to say, and then says to hell with it. someone's bound to spill the beans, and it's probably better it be her than five. ]

Or kidnapped.

[ just throwing that thought bubble out there.

clearing her throat, she ensures to keep in step with him, boots indenting the snow. ]

I don't think we're in Chicago anymore, although I've never been so I'm not… too sure if Chicago's a little like this? But if it's any consolation, everyone's randomly appeared here.

[ that… probably doesn't make him feel any better. christ, where's caroline when you need her? ]
setthetone: (02)

[personal profile] setthetone 2020-12-24 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
[What a lovely accent indeed!]

Oh, uh. I'm still looking into specialties, to be honest. I'm currently interning with general, though I just spent a lot of time with pediatric surgery before that.

[And he hopes that will be needed even less.

He flashes her a quick smile.]

What about you, Dr. Of Many Things?
setthetone: (surprised - what?)

[personal profile] setthetone 2020-12-24 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
Kidnapped?

[Carter's eyes widen when she puts that out there. In a way, it does make the most sense, doesn't it? Waking up in a strange place with no recollection how he got here. Memories flash and he suddenly thinks of gamma telling him how to act if someone ever snatched him up for ransom money. Is that what's going on here? Someone trying to get at the Carter family funds? But why let him wander out here in the cold? Maybe they had already asked for the money and now they had dumped him here to freeze to death?

His hands move back down to rub at his arms, his thoughts racing.]

So the same thing happened to you? You just woke up in the woods?
descendent: (pic#14197195)

[personal profile] descendent 2020-12-24 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
[ she nods. ] I woke up in the snow by a ravine in town. Someone I knew was there with me.

[ from what she can gather, he's come alone. it must be disorienting and frightening to not have anyone he recognises and possibly trusts nearby to experience this with him. ]

One person woke up by a beach. It's… it's not something I feel is explainable, where and how you end up here. or who brought you here and why. [ exhaling, her breath appears before her in a vapour. it's cold and it's miserable and she knows he's overwhelmed. ] I imagine you have the questions and I wish I could answer them for you—and I know everything I'm saying is probably making you feel even more confused, but you're not alone.

[ in her opinion, the most important thing she learned on her first day was that: you're not alone. ]
setthetone: (neutral - at work)

[personal profile] setthetone 2020-12-24 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. That's crazy.

[Literally. In the worst kind of way. But here he is, walking the snowy landscape.

What she says does make him feel better. Waking up alone in the middle of nowhere had been terrifying and he's glad to hear that there's others. It's also good to have something to focus on and other people are a very natural focus for him.

He gestures at her array of coat and scarves.]

Maybe... maybe we can get me some of these and then I can try and help out? I'm a doctor, is anyone hurt?

[He isn't, from what he can tell, but if they really were kidnapped maybe the people responsible hadn't been so kind to others?]
likeknives: (Neutral - arguement)

[personal profile] likeknives 2020-12-24 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they could be plottin' somethin'.

[Duh. He winces when the doors open too, it's just so damn cold and he crosses his arms close to his chest as he trudges forward in the snow.]

Waitin' for us to make a mistake. Waitin' for the perfect moment.
coopercoffee: (Default)

[personal profile] coopercoffee 2020-12-24 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I know how it must sound, but if you keep an open mind, to the potential and the possibility of them...

[Cooper follows his gaze towards the window.]

Ghosts, spirits, beings that we have no name for, things that are beyond us.

The world is stranger than you think, Dr. Carter. If we are indeed, even in the same world.
notanemptymotto: <user site="insanejournal.com" user="secret-x-garden">. (team ☤ as life breaks new ground.)

[personal profile] notanemptymotto 2020-12-24 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. Pediatrics are always some of the hardest ones to handle.

[ Helen gives a small shrug with that smile turning a bit mysterious. ]

I'm often involved in treatment and surgery. Diagnosis. A bit of everything, I'm afraid. My patients are... unique in many ways. I handle their care entirely with my staff. You could say I run something of a private practice.
setthetone: (neutral - syringe)

[personal profile] setthetone 2020-12-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
[Okay. Carter glances back over his shoulder but bites back his remark because it was annoying before but now? Now he's worried. Maybe he should have gone alone because this guy is clearly paranoid to an unhealthy degree and who knows what else he is capable of.

And now here they are again, out in the snow. Now what? He tries to think back of his psych rotation. De-escalate. Don't argue. Focus on the fear behind the delusion.]

Has that ever happened to you? Police doing something like this?
setthetone: (benton - that's fair but you suck)

[personal profile] setthetone 2020-12-25 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
If we are in the same world? You can't possibly believe that?

[He shakes his head.]

Look, I, I'm sorry, this is all too much for me. Maybe we should look at some of the other places. I'm sure there's a perfectly normal explanation for what has been happening to us.
setthetone: (neutral - syringe)

[personal profile] setthetone 2020-12-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
They really can be, yeah.

[Oh. It's getting cryptic again. Maybe it's just a thing she does? Carter gives her another bewildered smile.]

I haven't really worked in the private sector but that sounds very interesting. Unique as in rare diseases?
40seconds: (𝟢𝟤𝟪)

[personal profile] 40seconds 2020-12-25 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
So, who's Diane?

[ Coulson happens to come up next to Dale just in time to hear that comment, and the following one about visions. ]

Sorry to interrupt, I just couldn't help overhearing.
likeknives: (Angry - salt)

[personal profile] likeknives 2020-12-25 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[There's a shrug, Eliot seems far more concerned about getting where they needed to be as fast as possible in this cold.]

Not me specifically, but I've seen it happen. I've seen good people screwed over by a system that was supposed to protect them. Doesn't take much for worse things to happen.

[He trudges through a particularly deep drift.]

I didn't notice any signs of a struggle when I woke up, which means they knew what they were doin'. Whoever brought us here, I mean.
coopercoffee: (Hmm)

[personal profile] coopercoffee 2020-12-25 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't matter what I believe. What matters is the truth of what's actually happening. I could be wrong and there is a perfectly normal explanation. But what if there's not?

[He looks sympathetic though, and his hand reaches out in an attempt to try to pat him on the shoulder.]

This is a lot to take in, in what's already a difficult situation. You're right, we need to explore and get more evidence before we start speculating.
likeknives: (Neutral - discuss)

[personal profile] likeknives 2020-12-25 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[Eliot turns to look towards the source of the voice. His own stance shifts, as if he's ready for the stranger to just start attacking, coming in swinging or something. Not that it's gonna happen, he's just literally prepared for every and any eventuality. What if this guy is just a decoy and someone is sneaking up from behind? You never know.]

Ain't the smartest thing in the world.

[Eliot's accent places him someplace vaguely from the southern American midwest, in this case Oklahoma. It's not as strong as it originally was, but the angrier or more stressed he gets, the more it comes out.]

What if this all disappears one day? Memory is unreliable.
likeknives: (Neutral - arguement)

[personal profile] likeknives 2020-12-25 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[Eliot looks up, immediately assessing the stranger for potential danger. He tries to keep his tone neutral and less off-putting, even though he has to bite back a snap. The stress of being kidnapped and dragged here against his will means he views everyone as a potential enemy.]

Thanks, you'd be surprised at what you can pick up when you get bored on deployment.

[A threat disguised as a friendly statement--he was in the military and can handle himself, if this guy wanted to try anything.]
Edited 2020-12-25 19:22 (UTC)
likeknives: (Confused - are you kidding me)

[personal profile] likeknives 2020-12-25 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Eliot looks him up and down, trying to assess him as a threat, and well, yeah, he's pretty sure that he could take this guy down in the event of a potential kidnapping so he shrugs, one-shouldered.]

All right, so if--if I believe you, that means there's some point to this all and someone's done this for a reason.

[There's a pause.]

Where did you wake up at?
likeknives: (Confused - salt)

[personal profile] likeknives 2020-12-25 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Weird.

[It's a joke but seriously, that is weird.]

So no information from the outside, no easy way to communicate. Makes sense, if you're trying to limit cooperation and people from organizing...
coopercoffee: (Diane)

[personal profile] coopercoffee 2020-12-25 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
My secretary.

[He gives a cheerful smile and waves his tape recorder so that the other man can see that he wasn't exactly just talking to himself.]

I know I can't exactly send this tape to her right now, but the information will be invaluable once we get out of here.
coopercoffee: (Detective)

[personal profile] coopercoffee 2020-12-25 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll have to make a shopping trip then.

[He seems quite happy about it, at least, and not at all daunted. He continues scraping until he's satisfied he's got enough and he folds up the paper very carefully.]

Oh! What sort of facility might that be?
coopercoffee: (Listening)

[personal profile] coopercoffee 2020-12-25 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
...strange.

[He sounds a little more troubled and a little less cheerful as he starts to follow the other man.]

I'm not familiar with Mathias...say, how many people are there, you think?
