test drive — winter

WINTER TEST DRIVE

Welcome to the test drive and thank you for your interest in The Village. This test drive is not game canon but will allow players the opportunity to experiment with game mechanics, the setting, and the flexibility of choice allowed by this game. The following prompts are examples of typical situations characters might face in the game. At least one thread from the TDM is required as part of the game's application process.

The setting details and locations are still being unveiled in the game, so prospective players are welcome to play with established locations or create their own within the general setting of Mathias.

( Recommended listening: )

INTO THE ENDLESS

Winter has arrived in Mathias. Snow falls steadily, big puffy flakes that pile up quickly in drifts as the wind blows them around town. The trees in the forest are covered in it, the branches bending under the weight and shaking when the piles fall from them to the forest floor. The roofs of buildings become solid white and drifts form in doorways as the wind tries to rush inside anywhere it can.

New arrivals wake in the forest, with its winding paths twisting back on themselves as they branch in either direction. It isn't safe to stray from the path, there is a menacing fog that waits just a few yards inward in any direction, but for now, there is nothing impeding movement along those snow-covered paths that cut through the trees. Continue stumbling in one direction and you'll reach the small town, coming out near the mishmash of quaint houses that nestle beside crumbling ruins that used to be homes. But choose the other and you'll seem to stumble on forever, huddling against the wind until there seems to be a clearing up ahead—

And then nothing. The earth opens up before you in a ravine so deep that the bottom cannot be seen. The other side can be seen, tantalizingly out of reach, and there is the sense that safety is just beyond, if only you could get there. But with that sensation is also the knowledge that if you stay here, you will die. The edge seems unsteady, like getting too close would set it crumbling and send you tumbling into that dark endless nothing that waits below...

BODIES WITHOUT SOULS

Benedict Books is nestled quaintly on the square surrounding Mathias's Town Hall, a thick layer of dirt covering the front windows. Looking through those windows provides a much different view than looking directly into the shop through the doorway — vague shapes and forms of figures seem to be inside, though no details can be determined through the streaks of grime. Flickers that resemble flashlights can be seen passing along the windows from time to time, and on occasion there is even a muffled tapping sound that comes from behind the glass, as if someone is trying to get your attention. The same distorted figures can be seen looking through the windows from the inside outward, but moving from one side or the other reveals... nothing. There is nothing there, and perhaps it is all in your imagination.

A portrait hangs at the front of the store to illustrate the namesake of the little shop... that may, in fact, not be so little. Dust covers everything in sight and detritus litters the wooden floor, as if someone left the door open and allowed half the forest inside.

The books are mostly familiar titles from the 1990s and earlier, but close examination will reveal that key details seem to have been changed. They fill shelves in neat lines along the walls and rows in between, the building almost seeming to stretch on forever until, finally, a small office can be seen tucked away in the back. A glance back toward the front door gives the impression that the room isn't that big, after all. Strange that you previously thought so.

Prying the door open is the only way to get inside the small office; the hinges have rusted and are caked with dirt and grime. Search as you might, there are no interesting bits of information to be found here beyond a few inventory lists on the little desk. There is, however, a green and gold safe in the corner that, no matter how many times one turns the dial, simply clicks and clicks. Scratches around the safe indicate that someone tried to get in at one point, though there's no indication as to whether they succeeded.

THE END APPROACHES

Standing at the center of Mathias, the town hall is a modest two-story building that would be welcoming if not for the faded sign, chipped paint, and deafening silence within its empty halls. It's a typical government building, with a reception desk at the front and rows of identical offices within, the names half faded from each door. But what catches the attention is a large bulletin board on the main wall beside the reception desk, once meant to hold flyers or announcements for the community.

What it holds now is decidedly different. Tacked onto the board are scraps of paper covered in an assortment of handwriting styles — requests for supplies should anyone find them, pieces of information shared in the hopes of someone understanding the strange symbols and mathematical equations, notes about those missing or recently deceased. And over the center of the board, tacked on top of other papers, is a map discolored with age. Mathias Township can be read in the corner, a stretch of forest displayed beneath it, but everything else has been smeared to illegibility with red... ink? Upon close examination, a keen eye will realize that the ink is actually blood, though whether it is human is unknown. And scrawled across that forest, nearly covering the illustration of a clearing and a large house within, are the words

he is coming

A number of tarnished metal pushpins are scattered around the edges of the board, waiting for future messages to be shared, and a stack of pristine white paper and pile of cheap ballpoint pens rest on one of three chairs beside the board. The chairs are clearly meant for those waiting for meetings and are covered in the same layer of grime as everything else in the building — everything except the pens, paper, and bulletin board.

[Buildings! Oh thank God, he's saved. At least his body is, from the cold - the jury is still out on his mind. Especially now that they jump RIGHT INTO BUSINESS, thanks Neil.

Carter glances over at him, his mouth opening. Closing. Opening. Man, this feels a lot like surprise quizzes during rounds. What's the nerve of the third occipital and which muscle does it supply along with it? Hnnngh.]

There's... many of them?

[Said with the confidence of a student who is trying to cover his ass. Which he absolutely doesn't have to do but it's almost an Pavlovian response at this point. He's searching Neil's face, fishing for an indication he's on the right track.]

Of worlds. Many worlds. Is what it hypothesizes.

I go to high school. [ she laughs, feeling a little embarrassed. she's not a surgeon, she's not a lawyer, she's nothing profound. all she is is a high schooler. or was—she's not quite sure she'll be graduating. ]

We can go into that house. [ she lifts her hand to gesture to one that seems well-kept, with its walls and windows intact. a few of the houses look like it, with various overgrowths. ] It might have a coat and gloves in there. The houses are… abandoned. I don't know if you'll find scrubs, but you never know.

So what do you do when you are so way in over your head you can't even properly freak out anymore?

Roll with it. A little wide-eyed, maybe, dizzy from the ride but moving along with a sink-or-swim attitude. It's what Carter knows best and in a strange symbolic way it doesn't feel all that different from the ER; with its overwhelming flood of information and its frightening demand for making decisions, with its unending physical and emotional strain. So here's Carter, stuck on this ride and he's rolling with it. Hoping it isn't about to go over a cliff to crash and burn.

After his first night in Mathias, he decides to go back to the bookstore. There's just something... comforting about it. Yes, the books themselves are odd but they're from his time period, everything has a look to it that he's used to and that just has a calming effect on his mind. Plus, he wants to have another look around and grab everything on medicine that they have because one, he feels like he's going to need it, two, if he makes it back to Chicago he better not fall behind on his studies, and three, he needs something rational in this supernatural mess to steady him.

So yeah, the bookstore is great. The bookstore with its... strange ghostly apparitions that he can maybe, sort of, casually gloss over?

Right.

Trying very hard not to think about ghosts he goes through the shelves, pulling out a volume here and there and flipping through the pages when he hears the door open. He knows there's other people here by now, he has met a few of them and he's always glad to see another soul but still... still his first instinct is to stay out of sight when he hears mumbling and sneezing and he slowly moves to the right to peek around the corner of the shelf first.

Only to draw back immediately with a startled gasp.

It's... him. It's him, except as an old, crazy person talking to himself and rambling about doors. Carter stares, his skin prickling with denial and dread because of all the uncanny things he has come across in the last 24 hours, this is definitely the worst? The sight is so weird that it kicks in an immediate flight response and man, he needs to get out of here. Scratch the bookstore, scratch familiarity, he is never coming back. Books are overrated anyway.

Except then Flynn is coming his way and he quickly ducks down, scurrying away to hide behind the next row of shelves.

Maybe knocking over some stuff along the way.

It's fine! There's ghosts! They probably moved the books because there absolutely isn't another person here, moving quickly towards the back of the room!

[ This man comes across as a combination of Price and Beverly. Mostly Beverly, which is in Carter's favor. Because for now, at least, Will curbs his natural response to answer with the disquieting truth of the events around his arrival. And people say he's got no social skills.

Time to answer a question with a question. ]

Mmm. [ Will makes the noise to show that he heard her before he takes a couple of steps away from Helen. He doesn't go far, merely changing his point of view as his eyes sweep the structures in the area. ]

Do you know what building was the first to become available?

[ Her words cause Will's lips to twitch in the first semblance of a genuine grin. From the mouths of babes. ] Most crazies I know always keep a representation of alcohol available in their hallucinations.

[ Was he suggesting this was a hallucination? Or was he pointed out that without booze there was no way it could be a hallucination? Will himself wasn't entirely sure about the answer to that question. ]

What about insects? [ So often people split the categories between animals and insects. As any doomsday preparer would say, insects were more likely to survive an apocalypse than creatures with endoskeletons. ]

Well, some of the guys here made moonshine, but they're just the normal flavour of dudes who like to drink, far as I know.

[ She sort of smiles back, because she's fond of those guys anyway, but she also thinks Will's comment is pretty funny. Alcohol is a hit or miss thing where she's from, and it's usually disgusting. She's had it sometimes, sure, but it's not her thing. Hard to fight off a horde of Infected if you're trashed, after all. She likes weed more, though that also has consequences if you're not careful.

Not that she's about to just tell all that to some new person she doesn't know.
]

So are you crazy? You think this is some hallucination? I fucking wish, because I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have lasted three damn weeks if it was.

[ Not that she'd know, really. ]

Insects? Nope. I mean, it's cold as shit here and has been all month, so maybe that's why? But...I don't think that's why. It's probably all related somehow.

Eliot is standing by the door, watching the scene unfold of the strange guy muttering to himself and looking like he's trying to figure out not only the notes but the strange symbols.

There's no way that he himself is going to figure out what they mean, but the puzzle's he's interested in are people. Is this guy dangerous? Does he pose any threat? What is the best way to take him out, if that's necessary?

There's nothing wrong with building some kind of mental database on all the people here just in case...besides, if this guy is some kind of genius and he figures it out, he'd like to be the first one to know.

Still, he'll probably get more info out of him if he approaches him in a friendly way, so he puts on one of his country boy personas and crosses his arms, moving to stand next to the taller stranger.

"You figure out what those fancy-lookin' things mean?" He's all smiles, trying to be disarming.

Dale Cooper has an armful of books in his hands as he walks by, hearing the commotion of someone talking to themselves and probably trying to open the safe. He's been trying to figure out the discrepancies between the books and from what he remembers, but it looks like this fellow might need some help.

"I gave it a good try myself, but no luck."

He sounds quite friendly and cheerful even in the general worrying state of things. Sure, there are moving images in the windows and that can't be explained, but that didn't mean he couldn't stay positive about it. Or at the very least, they didn't seem dangerous in any way.

He puts his stack of books down on a nearby shelf for a moment.

"It's possible it's welded shut or broken."

I see! I'm sure you miss it greatly, especially the state-of-the-art part.

[He misses it and he doesn't even know what it is. Even with the successful sample he's not going to get much out of it without proper equipment. Forensics was not his specialty anyway.]

I'll hang onto this for now until we can do something with it. Unless you'd like to give it a try?

Small place. Small town.

[Not that he minds small towns, it's just the whole being kidnapped into one thing...]

A lot of people discount it, but sometimes all you've got to go on is instinct and your gut.

[He folds up the sample's paper envelope and sticks it into his pocket.]

Abandoned, huh? Anyone figure out why that happened?

Excellent start, doctor!

[Aaaaaaaaaaaand that enthusiasm is back. He clasps his hands together excitedly.]

People discount it but phone books are very telling about places. You can find out everything you want to know about a town by its phone book. Restaurants, plumbers, roof repair, department stores--it's all there, lives lived out and immortalized in those thin, yellow pages.

[He sighs happily.]

Right, we breathed in some fumes that launched us miles and miles away from where we originally were. Or that damn chemical spill was a tsunami that carried us here.

[He shakes his head, rolling his eyes with a scoff.]

When you need to get a person from point A to point B without them knowin' or noticin', there are a few things that have to be done or the police will be on you in no time. They have to be knocked out or completely immobile, because any, any sign of a struggle will leave a million clues. Footprints tell how many people are involved, how heavy you are, what kind of shoes you're wearin', and that tells you the kind of work a person is in. I'd say we were probably given some kind of tranquilizer 'cause if they physically knocked us out we'd have a headache by now.

the end approaches

[ Maria wouldn't say she's used to weird, exactly. Largely unfazed by weird, maybe. Stoic in the face of weird.

Perpetually annoyed by, and soforth.

Still, she had thought there would be a good night's sleep between finishing her reports on the colloquially-labeled 'Battle of New York' and the next bit of bullshit on the universal agenda. Or at least a decent cup of coffee and a muffin.

Instead, she finds herself in the middle of a ghost town, still in her grimy gear, cuts untreated and stinging in the cold. She makes her way up the front steps of the town hall--good a place as any to start looking for answers. It's not as cold inside, at least, and she allows herself a moment to warm her hands before making her way over to the bulletin board.

The map draws her eye first, of course. She knows what dried blood looks like, and her extreme lineface shows what she thinks of the message. Under her breath: ]
At this point I'd lay even odds against Cthulhu and the milk man.

[ That's when she notices one of the other messages.

In Memoriam, Phillip Coulson.

The stillness of shock ripples through her. ]

[ Daisy spends a lot of time in the town hall. Long, boring days of ill-kept time have been wasted away in these halls, poring over seemingly endless stacks of papers that have given up exactly zero secrets about the creepy town they've all found themselves trapped in. But what else is there to do? The fog keeps them trapped and they've seen what it can do to people, and without communications to any outside world...

She's honestly starting to wonder if an outside world even exists here anymore.

Sighing, she returns the latest pile of park permit applications to the desk where she'd found them and stands, stretching her arms up over her head and wincing as the motion reminds her that she's still injured. Strips of grey cloth cover the palms of her hands and wrists, wrapped tightly enough to serve in place of a bandage, disappearing under the sleeves of her sweater. Mathias has not been kind to her in the weeks since her arrival. Picking up her coat, she makes her way to the front of the building, turning a corner into the front reception hall—

And freezing in shock at the sight of the person standing there. ]
Agent Hill. Not a face I was expecting to see here.

And I've walked through clocks into storybook kingdoms. And that shit was pretty real.

[ Eliot's sure there has to be a similar way to get out of this place. They always find it once everything gets the most dire, so, you know, he just has to wait for shit to really hit the fan. ]

But for now, there's food and there's bathtub moonshine and no one makes you want to strangle them. So it could be worse.
