With a heave he's able to get one arm up on the edge, bare hand scrambling for a patch of dead grass tipped in frost. Waking up in the cold and wandering aimlessly has made it hard to focus, and he should have seen the ravine, should have felt the soggy, unsteady ground underfoot, but he didn't.
