Taking it all in-- the terrifying uncertainty and mystery of it all, the old wounds scratched open by the the promise of voices in the dark-- there comes a point when Jeff's frazzled emotions seem to hit a peak, and then level out into a shrieking plateau. It's like it has to pull all of his anxiety inward just to keep it going, leaving him in an almost zen-like state of internal screaming.
